The cold affects our hair more than we may think, not only do we use more heat on our hair in the wintertime (no one wants to catch a cold from wet hair!) but the hair becomes drier due to less moisture in the air, tangled and static with use of hats and scarves and overall just looks way more lacklustre and dull. I have bleach in my hair, so in the summer it is usually lighter and brighter and doesn’t have these benefits in the colder months.
Every winter I like to make sure that the products I’m using are protecting the moisture in my hair, which is usually my main concern anyway. I find that if my hair is hydrated and I’m using a heat protectant, the rest just falls into place.
Over the past few months, I’ve been working with Regis Salons, a group of high-end salons in the UK. Not only are they fantastic salons but they stock a huge amount of professional haircare online from brands such as GHD, Olaplex, Kerastase, Neal & Wolf, Moroccanoil and weDo online and in-store. I really love trying new hair-care and I feel as though it’s a neglected area in the blogging industry, with people turning their focus to skincare and makeup but to me, our hair is just as important!
The BIGGEST haircare tip I could ever give you is to invest in a shampoo and conditioner that will nourish your hair. Make sure it’s free of all nasties (SLS, Silicones, Parabens etc) and suited to your hair type. Please don’t go spend a lot of money in a salon on colour and treatments, only to go home and ruin it with a shampoo that will damage your hair!
The shampoo and conditioner that I have been using for the past two months is the wonderful Neal & Wolf, their Daily Cleansing duo which works to retain moisture and rehydrate the hair. I’ve noticed such a huge difference in the health of my hair by using this product and the moisture level of my hair has gone from being straw-like and extremely dry due to heat damage, to healthier, glossier hair. It’s really helped towards product build-up too, my hair feels extremely clean and lasts longer between washes too. I had to use a different shampoo and conditioner a few days ago due to forgetting to bring this with me to my other bathroom and I severely regret not doing the mad-dash upstairs to get it because my goodness, my hair felt awful after swapping it and I noticed a HUGE difference in the condition of my hair after using sulphates again just once.
After washing my hair I’ll usually go in with the Neal & Wolf heat protectant spray, which will ensure that when I’m blowdrying my hair, the hair follicle is protected from the heat used. I also have really porous hair so my hair takes forever to blowdry, the Neal & Wolf blow-dry mist has worked wonders for speeding up blowdrying my hair but has given it a little extra hold and volume too!
Olaplex. We’ve all heard of it by now and know of the wonders it supposedly does to your hair. I’ll be honest with you, the Olaplex Bonding Oil (step number 7) is the only Olaplex product I’ve tried but I can confidently say it’s the best oil I’ve ever tried. I’ve used my fair share of hair oils and often they just leave my hair feeling greasy or giving a false sense of moisture, but this Olaplex bonding oil has been an incredible gift to my hair. It looks noticeably glossier and healthier. If there’s one product I had to pick from the whole line up that’s made the most difference to my hair, it’s this. I intend on trying the rest of the Olaplex line soon, on and off with the Neal & Wolf shampoo and conditioner set.
I tend to curl my hair with the GHD soft curl tong and use the GHD Air hairdryer to blowdry my hair, if I’m after more volume I’ll also use the GHD Rise Volumiser. Weirdly, I actually don’t own any hair straighteners as I rarely wear my hair straight however I’d always wanted to learn how to curl my hair with them, it’s something I’ve just never mastered! I use a lot of GHD in my routine, I love them.
My full hair-care routine and curling routine is on my Instagram Reels if you’d like to check them out: www.instagram.com/_katiemeehan featuring the products mentioned. As well as an IGTV demonstration on the GHD Rise and how I use it to get volumised hair. I’d love to know in the comments below what you usually do to your hair and if there are any products I mentioned here that you’d like to try! Luckily, Regis salons have them all available in one place.
