When the Unexpected Happens: What to Do in the Moment

July 21, 2025 by Katie Meehan Leave a Comment

Nobody expects to get into an accident when they get behind the wheel, but it can happen, even if you do nothing wrong. Whether you are involved in a minor bump or a high-speed collision, it is vital that you know what steps to take next. This post will outline the main steps to follow if you ever get into an auto accident. Read on to find out more.

Stay Safe & Take Control

First, you need to pull over to a safe place if you are able to do so and put the hazard lights on. You should then check everyone for injuries and seek immediate medical attention if needed. Keep in mind that injuries like whiplash do not present immediately, so you should keep an eye on people over the coming hours and get checked over if you are worried. You should also remain calm and avoid assigning blame – this can help avoid future complications. Call the police if the road is blocked or if the other party flees the scene or you believe they are under the influence.

Gather the Right Details Without Delay

You must also obtain the necessary details at the scene. This will involve exchanging contact details and insurance information with the other motorist(s) involved and making a note of vehicle registration numbers. It is also wise to collect witness contact information, even if it is a minor accident with seemingly minimal damage. Additionally, make sure that you notify your insurance company as soon as possible, even if you do not plan on making a claim.

Use Your Phone Like a Pro

It is important to document the scene, which is easier than ever nowadays, thanks to smartphones. Remember to take wide-angle and close-up photographs of all the vehicles involved, damage to any property, road markings, injuries, and anything else that is relevant. You may also be able to collect video footage from dash cams or any CCTV in the area – this can make a big difference if you decide to pursue a claim.

Make a Claim

If you were injured in the accident and it was not your fault, you could be entitled to compensation. As mentioned before, some injuries do not appear until hours or even days later, and even a small bump can lead to delayed symptoms. This is why it is useful to understand how to claim for injuries immediately after an accident before making any decisions.

Hopefully, you will not have to use the information in this post, but it is important that every motorist knows what steps to follow after being involved in an accident. Whether a minor bump or a high-speed collision, it is vital that you ensure the safety of all those involved, exchange information, notify your insurance company, document the scene, and make a claim if you were injured and the accident was not your fault.
